　很美的歌名、很美的一幅情景，實際上卻是一個悲傷的故事。敘述一名死囚在黎明槍決前，夢見自己回到了故鄉。夢醒後，牧師為他做最後的禱告，警衛則準備押著他走向刑場........。

　" Green, green grass of home "由 Claude「Curly」Putman Jr. 創作，1965 年由 Johnny Darrell 首次錄製，同一年鄉村歌手 Porter Wagoner 的演唱在鄉村歌曲排行榜獲得第 4 名。之後分別被大牌歌手巴比貝爾和傑瑞李路易斯翻唱，後者收錄於他的專輯《 Country Songs for City Folks 為城市人唱的鄉村歌曲》。

　1965 年，威爾斯歌手湯姆瓊斯受邀在美國著名的《艾德蘇利文秀》(The Ed Sullivan Show )演出，停留紐約期間他拜訪了殖民唱片公司( Colony Records )。當詢問是否有傑瑞李路易斯的新作時，他得到了對方最新的鄉村專輯。

　湯姆瓊斯對專輯中的" Green, green grass of home "印象十分深刻，1966 年 11 月於英國錄製並發行，憑藉此曲在多個國家登上冠軍，包括英國、愛爾蘭、挪威、比利時、澳洲。該曲在 12 月 1 日登上全英單曲榜冠軍，在榜首位置共停留七週，單曲唱片銷售超過 125 萬張，在愛爾蘭單曲榜也蟬聯七週冠軍，在美國百大單曲排行榜最高第 11 名。

　湯姆瓊斯的版本走紅全球後，民謠歌后瓊拜雅( Joan Baez )和貓王( Elvis Presley )分別在 1969、1975 年翻唱；瓊拜雅版本的結尾改為：

　　Yes, we'll all be together in the shade of the old oak tree
　　When we meet beneath the green, green grass of home

　2006 年 9 月，傑瑞李路易斯錄製《 Last Man Standing 》電視特別節目時，湯姆瓊斯飛到紐約市與他合唱了這首歌，並表示路易斯的版本為他自己的錄音提供了靈感來源。
