Steinman 吉姆史戴蒙的作品讓歌手又愛又恨：他的歌曲特色是旋律起伏極大，充滿戲劇張力，總是讓歌手唱到臉紅脖子粗，甚至聲帶受損；而且樂句不但長、歌詞又多又滿，常讓演唱者唱到沒時間換氣而缺氧，簡直是以謀殺歌手為樂趣；但是換個角度來看，一旦能夠駕馭他寫的歌，不啻證明了歌手本身高超的演唱實力。 2003 年，吉姆史戴蒙在接受媒體訪問時，回憶 1977 年還未成名的當時： 「我抱怨著為什麼沒有人喜歡我的作品而且簽不到合約， 當時參與演出音樂劇《 Rhinegold 》的女演員 Mimi Kennedy 回答我說： 『呃....史戴，你的作品太複雜了，你不能寫些簡單的歌嗎？』 然後她提到一些老歌電台播放的貓王老歌，歌詞唱的大都是" I want you, I need you, I love you "。『你何不寫些簡單的就好？就像那樣" I want you, I need you, I love you "。』 我回答說：『好吧！我試試不要搞得太複雜。』 回到家後，我很努力的嘗試，但最終只能寫出" I want you, I need you but there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you, don't be sad, 'cause two out of three ain't bad. "。 『雖然仍有落差，但算是我最簡單的一首歌了。』」 那首他所謂最簡單的歌就是" Two out of three ain't bad "。 當時，吉姆史戴蒙正在為一位搖滾歌手編寫歌曲，那位新進歌手的體型高大壯碩，嗓音極具爆發力，他給自己取了藝名為 Meat Loaf 肉塊。 那張專輯名為《 Bat Out of Hell 》，是吉姆史戴蒙根據音樂劇《 Neverland 夢幻島 》所發展出來的故事，簡而言之就是具有未來色彩的搖滾版小飛俠彼得潘。史戴蒙為專輯所寫的最後一首歌，就是他自認寫得最簡單的情歌" Two out of three ain't bad "。 《 Bat Out of Hell 》專輯問世以後買氣節節上升，意外的捧紅了其貌不揚的新人肉塊，吉姆史戴蒙也成為炙手可熱的詞曲作者。" Two out of three ain't bad "是專輯中選出的促銷單曲中成績最好的一首，在百大單曲排行榜中最高名次為第 11 名，雖然沒有進入到前 10 名，隨著專輯熱賣，這張單曲唱片最後也賣出了 100 萬張。儘管單曲成績沒有十分出色，專輯倒是一直長銷熱賣，截自 2019 年為止，前後進出英國專輯榜達 522 週之久，是一張全球銷售 4300 萬張的超白金唱片。 由於唱片封面畫了一隻巨大的蝙蝠，台灣的代理公司因此將專輯譯名為《 地獄蝙蝠 》，雖然牽強但可以接受。 沒想到首張專輯的成功造成歌手和製作人的身價上漲，反而成為兩人繼續合作的障礙。不過，《 Bat Out of Hell 》這張唱片實在是太紅了，雙方後來還是在 1993、2006 年繼續合作了兩張續集：《 Bat Out of Hell - II : Back Into Hell 》、《 Bat Out of Hell – III : The Monster Is Loose 》( 不只電影有續集，唱片也有！)，其中第二集裡面的單曲" I'll do anything for love "登上了排行冠軍寶座，終於圓了肉塊多年來的夢想。 至於" Two out of three ain't bad "是什麼意思？ 就是警告對方說" I want you, I need you, I love you "這三項裡面你已經得到兩項了，千萬別肖想三項都要得到。 |
