　一盞燈在我腦海裡熄滅，我心想：「老兄，你做到了。」大約一個月後，我人在費城，寫出了這首歌的其他部分。

　我試圖弄清楚這首歌想告訴我什麼，以及它應該往哪裡走？那時，我意識到從 1957 年開始，它必須包含已經發生的所有事情。

　長度超過八分半鐘的" American pie "絕對是流行歌壇的經典作品，寫作並演唱這首歌曲的唐麥克林，是因為他的偶像 Buddy Holly 於一九五九年二月三日飛機失事身亡，當時的他是一位送報生，他所送出的每一份報紙都刊載了這則噩耗。那場空難使美國歌壇失去了三位搖滾樂的重量級人物，除了前面提及的 Buddy Holly，還包括 The Big Bopper 和 Ritchie Valens。十年後，唐麥克林寫下了這首長篇鉅作。

　歌曲的名稱引用自蘋果派，正如美國流行用語" As American as apple pie "，蘋果派是最令人愉悅的美國食品。到了 20 世紀，蘋果派已成為美國繁榮和民族自豪感的代名詞，是最具美國意象的非官方象徵之一。

　由於長度特殊，當年的單曲唱片一面無法完整收錄，所以史無前例的分割為雙面單曲唱片發行，A 面長 4 分 11 秒，B 面長 4 分 31 秒。一開始，電台習慣只播放 A 面，後來應廣大聽眾要求，乾脆播放專輯唱片裡的完整版。

　" American pie "被描述為「20 世紀最成功和最受爭議的歌曲之一，曾在全美百大單曲榜連續獲得四週冠軍，成為歌曲長度最長的冠軍單曲保持了近 50 年的紀錄，直到 2021 年才被 Taylor Swift 泰勒絲的" All too well "( 10 分鐘版本 )打破。

　瑪丹娜在 2000 年曾翻唱成舞曲風格的刪減版，老安一向欣賞作風大膽豪放的娜姐，但這回卻覺得她的翻唱真的褻瀆了這首歌。怪的是，瑪丹娜的版本雖然在美國只獲得舞曲排行榜冠軍( 百大單曲榜第 29 名 )，但在許多國家都獲得冠軍，卻未收錄在她的精選輯裡。

　這個版本是瑪丹娜為自己主演的喜劇電影《 The Next Best Thing 好事成雙》所灌錄，原本只收錄在電影原聲帶中，但公司高層極力說服她也放進新專輯《 Music 》，她勉強答應，但事後就後悔了，因為覺得風格不搭。隔年發行的新版精選輯《 GHV2 》中，瑪丹娜放棄這首翻唱曲做為自我懲罰。

　" American pie "的歌詞影射當時美國諸多社會、文化現象，尤其是通俗音樂，若非親身經歷過那個時代，一般樂迷很難從歌詞字面上瞧出一點端倪。多年來，唐麥克林一再拒絕解釋歌中提到的人物和事件背後的象徵意義；他最終在 2015 年出售創作手稿時發布了他的創作筆記，並解釋了其中部分內容。

Starting around 1954, a number of songs from the rhythm and blues charts began appearing on the overall popular charts as well, but usually in cover versions by established white artists, (e. g.
